The first house is the chart's front door. It holds your physical body, your bearing, the impression you make in the first minute, and the way you begin — a conversation, a project, a life.
Houses are not signs. The signs describe how something happens; the houses describe where in a life it happens. The first house is the how you arrive — and every chart has one, whether or not a planet is sitting in it.
Angular, succedent or cadent
Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the loudest in a chart — planets here act, and act visibly. The first house is angular.
A planet in the first house
A planet here is worn openly. It shapes the face you present and is the first thing people meet.
An empty first house
An empty first house is entirely normal. Read its sign and its ruling planet instead. Most charts have several empty houses — there are only ten or so bodies for twelve rooms, so emptiness is the norm and means nothing bad.
Why the natural sign matters
Each house has a sign that belongs to it by nature — here, Aries, ruled by Mars. That association is where the house's reputation comes from: The first sign, and it behaves like one. But the sign on your first cusp is set by your birth time, and it is the one that describes how this part of your life actually behaves.
