The bottom of the chart: your origins, the home you grew up in and the one you make, your parents' legacy, and the private self nobody at work meets.
Houses are not signs. The signs describe how something happens; the houses describe where in a life it happens. The fourth house is the where you come from — and every chart has one, whether or not a planet is sitting in it.
Angular, succedent or cadent
Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the loudest in a chart — planets here act, and act visibly. The fourth house is angular.
A planet in the fourth house
A planet here works below the surface — in family patterns, in the house you live in, in what you only show at home.
An empty fourth house
An empty fourth house still has a story; read its cusp sign and its ruler. Most charts have several empty houses — there are only ten or so bodies for twelve rooms, so emptiness is the norm and means nothing bad.
Why the natural sign matters
Each house has a sign that belongs to it by nature — here, Cancer, ruled by the Moon. That association is where the house's reputation comes from: Cardinal water: feeling that initiates. But the sign on your fourth cusp is set by your birth time, and it is the one that describes how this part of your life actually behaves.
