The top of the chart. Your vocation rather than your job, your standing in public, the authority figures you answer to and eventually become.
Houses are not signs. The signs describe how something happens; the houses describe where in a life it happens. The tenth house is the what you are known for — and every chart has one, whether or not a planet is sitting in it.
Angular, succedent or cadent
Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the loudest in a chart — planets here act, and act visibly. The tenth house is angular.
A planet in the tenth house
A planet here is visible. It shapes your career, your reputation and how you handle authority.
An empty tenth house
An empty tenth house does not limit ambition — read the sign at the midheaven and its ruler. Most charts have several empty houses — there are only ten or so bodies for twelve rooms, so emptiness is the norm and means nothing bad.
Why the natural sign matters
Each house has a sign that belongs to it by nature — here, Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. That association is where the house's reputation comes from: Cardinal earth: ambition with a structure under it. But the sign on your tenth cusp is set by your birth time, and it is the one that describes how this part of your life actually behaves.
